Mestre Steen

Steen Møller has been physically active his whole life, and always striven to be the best in his field. The competitor in him has always dominated, and his will power and desire to learn new things has brought him far.

Back when he was 12 years old, he experienced the Carneval in Copenhagen for the first time and was launched on a grand journey towards a life as a capoerista when he met a small, thin and charismatic Brazilian woman named Ana Pompeia, who not only taught him samba, but also introduced him to capoeira. At her samba school, Steen Møller was also taught to play samba by the percussionist Michael Aabye.

At 14, Steen Møller studied tae kwondo with a great Korean master, and later earned his black belt. By 17, he was an active dancer with experience on the stage, and had begun teaching both samba and taekwondo.

In 1987, Mestre Toni Vargas and Mestre Peixinho took their first trip to Europe, and even though Steen did not get the chance to take a class with them, just meeting these two relaxed and charismatic masters of movement was a turning point in his life as they became the manifestation of capoeira for him.

After completing his education as a Physical Education Teacher in 1989, Steen Møller spent a half-year in Rio de Janeiro training with Mestre Peixinho and also studying Samba Gafiera (pair dancing). He also participated as a musician in the Rio de Janeiro Carneval as part of the Samba School Academico da Rocinha. After returning home, Steen Møller started Capoeiraskolen Senzala in Frederiksberg in 1991.

He travels regularly to Brazil for inspiration and has a very close relationship with Rio de Janiero and the city’s capoeira culture.

In 2001, Steen Møller began to study at the Department of Exercise, Nutrition and Sports, Copenhagen University; but with a thriving capoeira school and a growing family, he needed an unusual program focused on personal development which could be combined with, and supplement his physical and musical talents.

Aiming to become a physical therapist, he began a 10 year educational journey at home and abroad with Vivian Person and Steffano Sabetti. Mestre Steen is now a certified physical therapist: L.E.P, Group Leader in Dansergia (dance therapy) and a Practicioner in Process Inquiry (communication techniques for counselling, coaching and supervision).

In 2011, he became the first European to earn the title Mestre de Capoeira in a large graduation ceremony in Rio de Janeiro. He is a specialist in Afro-Brazilian music and dance culture. As a professional capoeirista, dancer and musician; he has more than 20 years experience as a trained artist, leader and teacher in Denmark and abroad; as well as many years of experience in organizing large capoeira festivals.

His competence in physical therapy, which supports and complements his capoeira, is an important reason for the unique and respected position that Mestre Steen and Capoeiraskolen Senzala hold today, both in Denmark and abroad.
